Special Magical Treat

This mix is two hours of music that I listened to while I was growing up, mostly from the age of 5 to the age of 12, but not entirely limited to that — some shit I didn’t discover until closer to 16 and beyond. Essentially, my mom had a gnarly vinyl collection that she’s been hanging on to her entire life, since she was a teenager. When she was, like, 16 or so you could buy an LP for like 6 bucks. She had a million.

Growing up, I spent lots of time perusing my mom’s vinyl collection. I would ask her to put on albums whose covers I was fascinated with. When I got old enough to work the record player, and respect the fucker — always remembering to wipe the vinyl with the cleaning pad — I would play records myself. That’s when I sank into Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, and learned to fear music.

I’ve provided a playlist here, and some wordage for each track… For the most part, I might not remember exactly when I heard each track, but I remember how they made me feel… So, here it all is… Maybe this is some insight into who I am and why am I the way I am. Sorry if there’s a million typos — but I don’t really care.

Black Sabbath “Black Sabbath” from Black Sabbath
I must’ve been about 12 years old when I dropped the needle on this record. I remember my mom had left to run an errand or something… I had just got home from school, dropped off by the school bus. I remember watching as she pulled out of the driveway, I went over to the record bin. I scored Black Sabbath and the cover was just like “SHIT…” So I put it on. This is the opening track. I remember laying back on the couch and letting the song roll over me. Literally, this was the first time music scared the living shit out of me. It changed me. This would be the beginning of me actively seeking out my own music. “Oh no no, please god help me…”

The Eagles “Life In The Fast Lane” from Hotel California
As much as I love Joe Walsh, I’m not a huge Eagles fan… However, growing up I fucking LOVED the track “Hotel California” and I liked this track… I actually really liked this song. It’s a gnarly radio burner. I would crack a smile any time this would come on in the car, and my mom would drive a little bit faster.

U.F.O. “Rock Bottom” from Phenomenon
Of course I’m going to check out a band called U.F.O. This was the song that stuck. I remember cracking albums like Space Metal open as I got older, thinking maybe I’d hear something that sounded like Voivoid or some shit… No dice. However, this jam rules and it sticks out as a track I would crank a lot when I got old enough to play the records myself.

Aerosmith “Sweet Emotion” from Toys In The Attic
Goddamn, Aerosmith got really terrible didn’t they? Remember their 90’s bullshit like “Crazy,” “Cryin’,” and whatever else, who cares? Fuck all that, I stand feet firmly planted that the self-titled album, Get Your WingsRocks and Toys In The Attic are awesome, AWESOME fucking records. This was instilled in me by my mom. Guess what? They fucking are. Listen to songs like “Movin’ Out,” “Mama Kin,” “Dream On” — which I almost used for this mix, “Same Old Song And Dance,” and obviously… “Sweet Emotion.” Now, I don’t like “Walk This Way” all that much, but whatever… Anyway… This track jams. Those early Aerosmith albums would always be with me as a youngster, those fucking burner grooves, the gnarly way Steve Tyler sang back then. All this is why it made me sad when my mom bought the fucking Armageddon soundtrack to rock “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” — what the fuck, mom??

If at any point you wanna be like, “Dude, this is like the fucking Dazed & Confused soundtrack” you can pretty much go fuck yourself. Yeah, it is a lot like that… and guess what I fucking love that movie, so suck me beautiful. Alright, alright, alright…

T. Rex “Bang A Gong” from Electric Warrior
Still to this day, one of my favorite album covers. Of course, like everyone, I’ve heard this song approximately ninety-nine million goddamn times, but the thing is, I still love it. At 28, after spinning this record — both my mom’s vinyl copy, a cd version I bought when I was 22, and my own vinyl version picked up at around 26 — hundreds and hundreds of times; no, “Bang A Gong” is not my favorite song on the record anymore… Growing up, though? Yeah. Who didn’t think this song was sick as fuck. Even when you hit adolescence and you’re like “GET IT ON, GET IT ON!” and you sort of get that it’s about doing it. Yes. Growing up, yes, I listened to T. Rex when I was really like 8 years old. Goddamn, that album cover still rules. Glam, y’all.

Alice Cooper “I’m Eighteen” from Love It To Death
I’m not even sure my mom had this record… I know she had Killer and School’s Out — with the desk artwork cover, that you could open up to reveal the vinyl… However, “I’m Eighteen” was always one of those ragers that would come on the classic rock radio and I would wild out. It was heavy and grimy and sinister, it made me want to grow up and smooch girls and get in fights and kick teeth in. Black Sabbath made me know that music could scare you, Alice Cooper made me feel like I could scare people.

Electric Light Orchestra “Showdown” from On The Third Day
My mom had an E.L.O. greatest hits LP and we’d listen to it, and I was familiar with “Showdown” because it got heavy rotation on classic rock radio. Sticking sort of with the vibe from the Alice Cooper shit, this song literally made me wanna show up to a fight with this jam cranked. This song gave me the same feeling as Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak,” in a lot of ways. Just made me wanna grow up and be a fucking badass. The shit is fucking intense.

Queen “We Will Rock You” from News Of The World
Straight up, I used to go fucking bananas when this song would come on the radio when I was like 5 years old. I went so crazy for the song, that my mom made me a fucking Queen greatest hits mixtape. Yes, a legit mixtape, for a 5 year old. It was the first piece of music I ever owned. I remember the black store-bought cassette, with my mom’s handwriting, every song scrawled on there. Yeah, though, I would lose my goddamn mind on this jam. For some reason, I actually don’t remember hearing it on the radio a lot as a kid… Though, for the past 10 years, I’d say rock radio has killed this track with the “We Will Rock You” / “Bohemian Rhapsody” combo. I must say, nowadays, as on this mix — it sounds odd to hear something aside from “Bohemian Rhapsody” follow it, but as a kid, I fucking hated when that song started up. I wanted “We Will Rock You” to last forever. Side note: the weird, robot creature on the cover of News Of The World used to creep me the fuck out, with the people in his hands and the blood and those weird ass red eyes. Shit.

Led Zeppelin “Black Dog” from IV
Alright, could’ve easily went “Stairway To Heaven” based on how many times I heard that song from 1980-whatever til I was a 12 year old in ‘96… and y’know? It is a killer fucking jam. Still to this day, I don’t mind when “Stairway…” comes on the radio. Needless to say, though, IV was cranked a lot in my house growing up, and “Black Dog” was a goddamn groover. Still to this day, it triggers a weird shimmy in my spine. I dunno, I just dig the riff. I went through a Zeppelin stage around 2006-2007, when I heavily revisited their greatest hits, and literally put them on a million mixtapes, even saddling them up next to shit like Arab On Radar and The Jesus Lizard. Weird times.

Pink Floyd “Wish You Were Here” from Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd, absolutely a cosmic entity that swept from my mom’s noggin to my own, like some kind of mother-son telepathic linky thing. We loved Pink Floyd. We’d sing along to every single motherfucking Pink Floyd song that would come on the radio. We watched The Wall together when I was like 10. All that.

Specifically, though, I remember a time — and I have no idea the prelude to this — being in a big field, probably a rice field, sitting on the hood of someone’s car while this was playing. I was probably 16 or 17 at the time, and I had just purchased this on cd for myself. I want to say I was with a girl I knew from school, and this was the prime time that I’d just started smoking grass, so that might have something to do with the location. All that shit aside, it was perfect. Thanks Pink Floyd, but it’s not like we fucked or anything.

Allman Brothers Band “Melissa” from Eat A Peach
Goddamn Allman Brothers. I still love you. This was just one of those perfect songs that would come on the radio, and it just fit. It made everything seem so perfect. Growing up in North Eastern Arkansas, as a kid, every drive out of town to visit family, there were just miles and miles and fucking miles of rice fields. You’d drive with the windows down. “Melissa” was a perfect song for those moments. Sure, “Whipping Post” is great, “Midnight Rider” is great; that’s why I own most of their albums now, on my own, so I can jam all of it. “Melissa” though, that’s the kind of jam I would hear at fucking 8 or 9 years old, and know someday, I’d fall in love, for real.

Linda Ronstadt “Blue Bayou” from Simple Dreams
No idea why I put this on one day. I think I liked the cover of Simple Dreams, but honestly, I can’t remember. I can’t remember how old I was either… but I think at this point, I was getting up there in my teens. Something about this track, shit, it just clicked. I would spin this record every day after that initial listen. It was just necessary. I’ll leave it at that.

Fleetwood Mac “Landslide” from Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac was mandatory listening in my house as a kid; not a fucking problem, mom, ‘cuz they fucking rule, thanks. Seriously, the lady had all of them… From the pre-Buckingham/Nicks era up through to the reunion shit. Obviously, Rumours was the special soul of the collection, but I’d say the self-titled got an almost equal amount of play, and probably mostly just for this song. It’s pretty perfect, huh?

Mountain “Nantucket Sleighride” from Nantucket Sleighride
You might remember “Mississippi Queen” moreso than this jam, in reference to Mountain’s hits, but let me tell you, this jam is fucking monstrously heavy. Mom had a best of LP, and I dropped the needle on it, probably to hear “Mississippi Queen,” but when this song played… It literally blew me away. I don’t know what it was; something about how heavy it was, yet how goddamned gorgeous it was. I still get the same feeling today as I got the first time I heard it.

The Kinks “Lola” from Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
I LOVED this jam as a kid, like as a little kid. When you hear it, just the pattern of it, the way it sounds and feels, the rhythm, it almost makes sense that it’s a song a young child could get into — never realizing it’s about a dude hooking up with a tranny. I fucking loved this jam. Every time it would come on the radio I would lose it, in a similar fashion to how I would lose my shit when Lou Reed’s “Take A Walk On The Wild Side”  would come on — also almost included. Sidenote: I had a great-grandmother whose middle name was Lola and I had an uncle who would sing his own take on this song, substituting legit lyrics for lyrics aimed at our grandmother and her weird-ways, shit referring to her nine-thousand cats and shit like that… Whatever. “Lola” fucking jams and The Kinks are still rad.

David Bowie “Space Oddity” from David Bowie
I like David Bowie. I’m not a huge fan, but he’s got some jams — “Queen Bitch,” “Life On Mars,” “Ashes To Ashes,” they jam. Anyway… Who didn’t hear this song at some point in their life? Yeah. It’s fucking awesome… I’d eventually get older, though, and come to enjoy Peter Schilling’s take on Major Tom way more, but that’s neither here nor there. My mom used to regale me with tales of her teenage adventures to concerts in Memphis, and then whip out a book with laminated ticket stubs to back her up. I was like “you’re so cool” and I meant it. So, I guess she saw Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust-phase thing, and that’s pretty rad. I guess mostly, I just always hated people that were close to my age that listened to David Bowie when I was in highschool. Stigmas. Whatever. I’d find Iggy. This jam is killer though, no shit.

The Rolling Stones “Sympathy For The Devil” from Get Yer Ya-Yas Out!
One cool thing — me and mom were totally like way pro-Stones, and against the Beatles. We didn’t hate them or anything, she owned a copy of The Beatles — “The White Album” — and “Revolution 9” was a pretty cool jam, but whatever… Anyway. The Rolling Stones were the shit. As a kid, I wasn’t all like Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers are the best! I would come to be like that, but regardless, I like the Stones. I didn’t know where every single song came off of their discography, but I liked them. I was a kid… Something about Get Yer Ya-Yas Out’s cover made it an immediate needle dropper for me. Also, I think that I thought the title was a reference to ladies pulling their tits out, and I could vibe on that. Anyway, solid shit; I love this song.

Mott The Hoople “All The Young Dudes” from All The Young Dudes
This shit was an anthem in my house growing up. No shit, a fucking anthem. My mom had every Mott The Hoople album, and hell, I think she might’ve even had two copies of this one. Regardless of that fact, I probably don’t even know that many other Mott The Hoople songs. This one, though, you don’t fuck around with. It’s epic. They killed it. Thanks David Bowie. Fucking ANTHEM.

John Lennon & Yoko Ono “Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him” from Double Fantasy
Yeah, I don’t give two shits about the Beatles but this album has some jams. Especially this track. I don’t know, I think I was just flipping through vinyl one day, and was like, I should give this a shot, and it’s a deep cut, it’s like the second to last track on the b-side, but it’s heavy. I don’t know. I can’t really say much. It’s just a song that’s always stuck with me. It doesn’t sound old at all, it sounds fresh all the time, every time.

Bobbie Gentry “Ode To Billy Joe” from Ode To Billy Joe
What a fucking great track. I don’t quite remember how I came on this song. I wanna say I heard it in a movie or on tv and it sounded really familiar, and so I asked my mom about it, and she pulled the album out and put it on for me. I swear, I asked to listen to that song forevermore after that. It’s just rad. It’s a funky, odd little jam but it’s a Southern Gothic tale of death and suicide. It’s fucking awesome.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “American Girl” from Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
Not one fucking bone about: I love, love, love Tom Petty. Always have, always will. I absolutely do not think he’s some Dylan-derivative. I think he’s pretty perfect. There’s a lot of songs I like more than “American Girl,” such as “Breakdown” and “I Need To Know,” both of which might be two of my favorite tracks of all-time… but, “American Girl,” like “Free Fallin’” or “Refugee” were big-time radio anthems that always stuck to me like glue. This shit, or any Petty really, comes on; anywhere, anytime, I’m gonna sing along like a madman. Fuck it.

Bad Company “Bad Company” from Bad Company
Yeah, so ok… I don’t know that my mom owned this record or not, she probably did, but I can’t remember. This was totally a classic rock radio thing for me. This song would come on, and I just wanted to own a gun and be an outlaw — much like when I heard “Gimme Back My Bullets” by Lynyrd Skynyrd — and to a slightly lesser extent “Copper Head Road” by Steve Earle. So, yeah, whatever… Bad Company. The jam is heavy as fuck and makes me want to break the law. This is the kind of song that put a really weird, chaotic streak in my brain. Songs like this are the reason I shot vodka like a maniac come highschool. I don’t care.

Peter Frampton “Do You Feel Like We Do?” from Frampton Comes Alive!
DUDE, you have no fucking idea how many times I’ve heard this on the radio. NO FUCKING IDEA. It’s cool though. Why? Because I love it. You know it. It’s the one with the talk box part… He totally mouths “I want to fuck you” as a guitar solo, and they play that shit on the radio, unedited. That is raw. It’s such a gnarly burner. Frampton Comes Alives was a goddamned treasure piece in my house, because my mom had totally seen Peter Frampton on that tour. Heavy times.

Tammy Wynette “Stand By Your Man” from Stand By Your Man
Switching gears a little bit here… Yeah, when we weren’t jamming the rock and roll shit my mom grew up on, country was around. I mean, I grew up here in the south, it’s a big deal. It was rock stations and country & western stations. Also, my grandparents — dad’s side — only listened to country music, and I’ll admit, even up into the 90s, there was some amazing country jams. I sort of hate the shit nowadays, but I’ll openly admit, I can get down with a lot of the country & western vibe. Whatever. Anyway, I played this track one time and my mom was kind “whoa, what the fuck?” — she didn’t say that — but what I’m saying, is she just never expected me to vibe on something like Tammy Wynette. Fucking loved the shit though… I had her take me to Hastings so I could buy my own cd copy of her greatest hits. “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” and “I Don’t Want To Play House,” that shit is heavy. She married and had a kid with George Jones, got addicted to pain pills in the 80s; all that… Tammy Wynette was gnarly.

Lynyrd Skynyrd “Simple Man” from (Pronounced ‘lĕh-‘nérd ‘skin-‘nérd)
Dude, shit gets heavy right here. When I got old enough, like ten or eleven, my mom laid this on me… I mean, I’d probably heard it before, but she laid it on me, like heavy. This was her song to me. She wrote out the lyrics for me. She basically gave it to me as a guide to life. That’s always been with me. Sure, it’s just some fucking Skynyrd song, but… It’s special to me, and has been since that day. I’ve actually looked back on this jam in times of weirdness; be it with girls or just life, or whatever. Skynyrd has so many jams that make me wanna get wild and punch shit — “Saturday Night Special” or “That Smell” come to mind — but this one, this one’s special. It’s perfect.

My mom was even going to put the lyrics to this song on my senior page in the senior high year book. I sort of begged her not to, because at 17, that seemed like some sort of social suicide, and I was a little bitch. However, looking back on it; she totally should’ve done that shit… It would’ve been awesome.

Slade “Gudbuy Gudbuy” from Slayed?
Alright, THE END. Obviously put this track last just for the “goodbye” reference, but legit — this record was maybe my absolute favorite in my mom’s collection, for years… and mostly because of this song. I probably heard it for the first time when I was around ten, when my mom’s boyfriend at the time, picked it out of the collection. It just clicked, and it was one that I begged to be played from then on out. It’s just an amazing jam. I always loved their name too, and the title of the album, I just thought it was kind of funny. I don’t know. I wish I had something more epic to say, seeing as how this is the end, but I don’t… Whatever.

There you have it… My upbringing, musical-wise. Shit jams. Listen to the mix. Judge me. Whatever… I don’t give a fuck.

There’s a lot of stuff I could’ve put on here, but omitted for time or whatever, like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and other shit, but I feel like this list is concise and perfect. All these songs hit me over the head as a youngster, and I still like them all to this day.

MIXTAPE MONDAYS! THE EXTRA SPECIAL SLOWED AND THROWED EDITION!

I am extremely honored and elated to be premiering a very special mixtape today. Finally someone has really understood the depths of my weird, and not only have they gotten a hold of it, they’ve made me a slave for it. If only you could see me handcuffed, on my knees begging for the depths of my weird to be brought forth like some kind of offering to the music gawds. Trust me, you don’t want to see that. Actually, you pervs would probably love to see that. Well you can dream.
So the story goes, D-Man (Dan Svizeny of Cough Cool), walked into a bar and punched Gnarfield (Pink Priest aka William Cody Watson). Gnarfield turned into a wolf and D-Man gave him a high-five. Bro’s ever since. The result is a new musical project they call Scissoring, in addition to this two part mixtape that sounds like it was devised during a Hunter S. Thompson-esque ether/acid/horse tranquilizer trip. But the really fun kind…where Biggy, Elliott Smith, and The Rolling Stones all hold hands and disappear into the forest together just after they have beckoned for you to follow. Trip indeed. So without further ado I present to you fun for the whole dysfunctional family:
